This might not suit this forum but I just thought I would share this with you folks; I recently downloaded this program called PageFour and it looks quite promising. It's definitely not a one size fits all type of deal, but there are some interesting features in PageFour that people will find useful. I've already started taking apart my Word Document (provides support for importing MS Word, txt, etc, docs) and messing around with structure and what not.
One of the nice little features it provides is the ability to set a maintain formatting across new pages. So if you're the type to prefer writing using a manuscript format (minus page margins etc) you can save the paragraph format and use it on new pages etc.
There are tools that scan your "pages" and give you statistics on words and such - I haven't found a word counter as yet.
One caveat is the fact that it does not export or produce a unified document (it stores "pages" as separate RTF files) - so assembling a manuscript will take a little labor.
It does provide some great archiving tools along with appropriate managers; this is definitely useful for version control in your documents.
Like I said, it's not a one-size-fits-all deal, but it is helpful for someone
