Things that make you go Hmmm!

If you write about a subject which is considered to be strange, violent or off color, do you feel people will relate you personally to the subject? If you do feel so, how does this affect your content?

Stanley Kubrick hit all those examples you have there.....I think people saw him as a great writer and filmmaker. Its all about how you see things and relating that to the masses.....

If you do an opinion piece like Fahrenheit 911 then absolutely. Most other things, no.

It depends on how the script

is presented. How the writer presents themself through the script.

There are some writers who you read thier scripts and it just makes you go "yew."

I do wonder about the stablity of writers who come up with these gore fests. That.... that kinda worries me.

Quietly shuffles out of the back of the building and hopes no one notices. :gone:

Don't read my FEAR script or LAST ONE STANDING and such...

Oh, Icerose

not you. Oh my.

Wait, um, er, I, I, ......

I need to withdraw my original comment.
In my thriller script a guy screws a woman and then cuts her still beating heart out and stores it in a jar with her wedding ring.
What on earth does THAT say about me?

That is a RHETORICAL question!!!!!

Hehehe, it says you write dark. I have a dark streak in me, I am a very nice person who wouldn't even think of hurting someone unless they were threatening my family or myself, in that case kill em all. But outside of that I have a fairly mild temperment, and yet here comes this dark writing.

Which is why I don't think writing really reflects on the writer unless it's more of an opinion piece or it's highly preachy where you are hearing the author instead of the characters.

Scripter called himself mentally unstable.

WHICH BRINGS US TO THE QUESTION: When people pass a car accident, are they looking to see if everyone is OK...OR are they stretching their neck to see a mangled body? Me thinks we all have a dark craving for the gruesome side of life! Thank goodness for 'B' Movies.

That's a good point. I still don't think it reflects as much as people think unless it appears in something personal like a diary.

I think writing about a subject that's strange, violent, or off-color might say you're an imaginative writer able to place himself in some very dark mindsets as needed, and no more--unless you consistently write the same few strange, violent, or off-color content into everything you do.

I mean, I don't think ill of a novelist whose book includes incest, but when everything an author writes includes incest (or autoasphixiation, or extreme violence toward pretty women, whatever), I see someone who's got unresolved issues or an unhealthy interest in that activity.

Maryn, who sees this a lot in erotica

Well I write a little bit of everything so I think I'm safe. I just seem to have a knack for horror.

I used to love to write only horror (1st 7 scripts), but my style was (and still is) more like 1980's horror (those of you that know what I'm talking about are probably in their 40's) and everytime I watch something like Saw or The Grudge, I say to myself "How they hell do they come up with this stuff?" That's ok. Everything comes around and my Fright Night, NMOES and House sensibilities will be back in style once more.

For the past 5 years, I spread myself between action, adventure, fantasy, thrillers and a couple of weird off-beat comedies. I almost always have a little element of horror in everything I write, but it's more a tip of the hat than anything else.

Look at Mel Gibson, shrinks are now saying he must have been abused as a child in some shape form or fashion to be making such brutal and bloody films.....

I think I'm safe and sane too. Struggling with my lack of skill regarding correct format and structure, I have 4 finished stories which will someday be scripts. The Geek...Bar Room Brawlin Beauty...Cane Dogs & Dead Right, are all different. I am not like any of the characters in these stories. The stories just came to me. Which makes me wonder from where?

What are they saying about Tarantino and Rob Zombie?
