To end in 'ed' or 't'

Words such as burned, learned, dreamed are either spelled as such or end in t. Is this a case of one is American English and the other British English? I should know this but have to confess to not.

I agree with Carmy. However, in writing by US authors for the US market, if the tone is lyrical or poetic, or the work is fantasy, the -t ending can be quite effective, so keep it in your toolbox.
