Not in the AW forums, I swear!
eHarlequin is doing Book in a Year again this year. (Last year the focus was on polishing and submitting a manuscript for '05 BIAY.) It isn't something you sign up for, but they do have forums I guess where people talk about it. Each month they have a lesson, and I believe they give you assignments to complete on your own.

This seems so much more my speed. (NaNo was fine, but hardly put a dent in my WIP. A month! That's only 31 days. whine.)

Anyway, has anyone ever followed along and used this to write a book in a year? Did you like it? Hate it? Know anything about it?

Would love some input on this. I think I would do it. Like I said, a year is really more my speed when it comes to trying something as big as a novel.

TIA!

Jenny Crusie and Bob Mayer are doing something similar at their blog, but with a lecture each week, and going through, as much as possible, from starting a book to finishing and submitting it. One of them will post on Sunday almost every week of 2007, and the other will comment on the same topic (and answer some questions from the comment trail) on the following Thursday, and so on.

There's a link to the workshop at crusiemayer.com.

I've poked around the eharl book in a year threads before. I participated for a few months one year, and when the next year came around I stopped because the discussions and such seemed more geared towards newbies. Not that I'm slamming anyone, and if you don't have a lot of experience with writing, I'd say, yes, go with BIAY. However if you've already been writing for a while and know you're own pace, BIAY might seem kind of slow.

The tips are great, and if you feel more comfortable following a slower pace, then by all means go for it. The thread discussions are a lot of fun, too.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm on the eharl boards/community looking for ideas and such...getting to know folks too.. .I'm very interested in romance and think I might could actually do it.

As for book in a year I think it's great.

Slow is definitely my pace when it comes to fiction writing. I have gobs of experience with non-fic -- well, "gobs" might be stretching it a bit, but lets just say I feel fairly competent. I also make money doing it, so it's an obvious priority.

But I feel the lure of writing some good escapist stuff, and I already have a WIP that I would like to finish in between writing articles and copywriting. Having a year to do it, and with handholding, sounds like a good thing.

I can't seem to figure out their forum, though! I sure am spoiled by having AW, with its clear categories and stickies and instructions. I looked at eHarlequin and couldn't even find a thread for BIAY 07.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I'll see some of you over there. Or maybe we could do our own discussion here.

The eharl boards can be a bit confusing until you get the hang of them. The BIAY threads on the Write Stuff board. Here's the link - http://community.eharlequin.com/[email protected]@.4a832a6e. The threads are in the middle of the page.

For those trying to navigate the boards, here's a brief explaination of how to find things. The eharl boards are arranged by categories. The Write Stuff is the writers' board, they have a separate board for Harlequin lines and another for Silhouette lines. Social discussion are on the Social Cafe board. There are other boards for other things, but those are the ones I frequent the most. It does take a while to learn your way around, but once you do it's pretty easy to find what you're looking for. If you're looking for writing samples, check out the links at the bottom of the page. I believe the link is called Learn To Write. Under that link I believe is also the information for BIAY. Hope this helps.

I'm a total newbie with romance and even I thought the pace was incredibly slow. But eharl does a wonderful job with their articles, and since they're posted on the publisher's own website at least I know following the advice will help me in my submission.
