I recently hired someone to conduct some research for my non-fiction book. Rather that work out an elaborate contract, I would like to type an agreement on the back of the check I send her, the same way the magazines I freelanced for would have a stamp on the back of their checks.
This may be a mistake because over the last few years I've noticed that magazines no longer put their contract on the back of checks, and instead insist upon requiring me to sign a two- or three-page contract in advance of writing the article.
Two questions: Is there some problem with the old "contact on the back of a check"? And does anyone else used researchers, and if so, what type of contract did or do you have with them?
Thanks a bunch,
-- Josh
