I recently hired someone to conduct some research for my non-fiction book. Rather that work out an elaborate contract, I would like to type an agreement on the back of the check I send her, the same way the magazines I freelanced for would have a stamp on the back of their checks.

This may be a mistake because over the last few years I've noticed that magazines no longer put their contract on the back of checks, and instead insist upon requiring me to sign a two- or three-page contract in advance of writing the article.

Two questions: Is there some problem with the old "contact on the back of a check"? And does anyone else used researchers, and if so, what type of contract did or do you have with them?

Thanks a bunch,

-- Josh

Well on my checks you can't go beyond a certain line.
Why can't you just type up a contract that satisfies you both and fax it to be signed?

I agree with the previous poster. There are many free contracts that are short and sweet you can find online. Get a contract, type it up and have it faxed over. Your better-off that way. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses. Faxing, unfortunately, is not possible because the researcher is in a small and remote town in Mexico and has no access to a fax. I really want to put it on the back of the check, which eliminates the bureaucracy of exchanging paper back and forth. Also, I'd like to pay this person right away, because I'm certain they need payment ASAP.

This may be one of those circumstances where I pay now, and the two of us work out the details later. If it blows up in my face, c'est la vie.
