I just wanted to introduce myself to you and ask a question.

I am a teacher with life-long aspirations of writing. Sadly, I developed M.E and have been forced to spend my days confined to the house and bed for the most part. My circumstances have forced me to see things in a different light and I am determined more than ever to realise my dream!

I have a number of finished children's stories just lying around and I wanted to post them for feedback. However, I am concerned about the possible legal issues. Should they be copyrighted? What happens if I have a story accepted by a publisher and the work has already been displayed on a website such as this, is this likely to cause future legal difficulties? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best wishes
Annie O

Hi, Annie.

Welcome to AW.

We have a password protected area here for just such use: Share Your Work. What's posted there is not considered published, even on the web.

You will not get into legal trouble by posting some of your work here.

Welcome, Annie. :D

Welcome, Annie - feel free to post in SYW (share your work) and don't worry, like those above me said, that's not considered publishing or public.

Hi Annie! Does the O stand for Oakley?

Now that I've got the teasing part out of the way, you should definitely post your work. Chances are you'll receive terrific feedback.

One thing I've seen some folks do is delete their work after they've gotten the advice they need. This way, their stories aren't up for very long. And some of the stuff in Share Your Work has gone on to publication without any problems.

Good luck!:)

Thank you all for your warm welcome and sound advise. I have posted one of my children's stories (My Grandfather Abener) in the children's section of the Show Your Work (I think that's what its called anyway). Please do take a look; if you have the time and inclination your learned responses would be very much appreciated!

Once again, thank you for your lovely welcome!

Hi Annie, Welcome aboard. Stuck in bed? Perfect solution: write more! May I say that some of my favourite books are from the children's section: I love you THIS much, and : Alexander and the No Good, Very Bad, Terrible, Horrible Day are just two. Oh! James and the Snowman.
These of course compete with Dick Francis, Terry Pratchett, JK Rowling, Isaac Asimov, et al., and Lady Cat [if she finishes that book she already has me hooked on!]

Hi Annie. I popped over to the Share Your Work board and read your story. I don't know anything about children's writing so will not critque it there, but let me say, that was a story I could see myself sitting down and reading to a child. I'm sure you have a future in that genre. Good luck.
