I'm new to screenwriting and I've thorougly enjoyed and learned from all of the informative posts I've read since joining this forum.

I've been so impressed in fact that I've gone on to read many of your public profiles, wondering: who is this person?

Which leads me to my question: Is there a place on this forum that tells forum readers if John Smith is an academy award winning writer with five Oscars to his name? That John Smith teaches screenwriting at USC or NYU or some other such place? That he has sold fifteen screenplays and is in negotiations for another sale?

You get my drift?

I ask because I see so much expertise here, I want to know who's actively in the business, what they've written, what they've produced -- in short -- where they are in their career.

Is there such a thread here? If there is, point me in the right direction and thanks.

No credential thread that I know of. We're pretty low key here.

You'll find that the vast majority of people here are early in their career (regardless of how many years they have been doing it or their education).

There are some, like myself who have some minor credits, a few options here and there. Nothing to write home about. Not enough to quit the day job.

Then there are even fewer who are working solely as a screenwriter (and not eating dog food while waiting in line at the soup kitchen).

Then there are few, very few, the mystical, the almost invisible lurkers and watchers who are of note.

This is a big

complaint of mine.

NOT that people don't come on here and tell us who they are, what they've sold, etc, etc. I understand the reasons for not doing so.

It's that very few posters list anything in thier profiles. I enjoy reading the profiles and just kinda feeling like someone has taken a bit of time to intro themselves. Kind of gives me a background reference, just makes me feel like they are a bit more real.

(That said, I think I'll check to see if I've done a profile.)

Kw, I would say if you wanted to find out more about a poster then PM to say thank you and ask some polite questions then let them choose how much they want to reveal to you.

Keep in mind, too, that some folks simply don't "do" PMs.

ROTFL. K.

Kidding aside, that IS true. I didn't even KNOW these forums HAD PM's until I saw a little number up in the right hand corner of another forum I belong to...don't worry, I'm not holding it against him.

When professionals identify themselves, the board becomes sort of an uneven space: Some post with revealed identities while others post anonymously.

The identified professional leaves himself open to potshots. For instance, after he dispenses some advice, a faceless poster insults back with, "Well, I saw BIKINI BABES FROM THE 23RD CENTURY and you shouldn't be telling me how to write a script." The anonymous poster always has the edge in an argument like this; he walks away with his safe anonymity intact and untarnished.

There are bitter and jealous posters who have behaved as such and driven off helpful pro posters.

On the other hand, I don't think it's completely fair for a professional to dish out advice that he claims is based on his pro status but refuse to identitfy himself.

He could simply give out advice and not reveal that he's a pro at all. Just post like everyone else. It seems like a bit of a game when a poster tells everyone his advice is based on professional experience but then remains anonymous.

Regardless, the best advice you can receive is your own. So, write and read and study and market yourself to gain personal insight and experience.

Exactly, some people are real trolls and I know especially in the novel area then there are those who wish to remain anonymous because they don't want their time here to be tainted because of their experience. They want to be just a helpful poster here because of that reason only and not here to plug their own products and so forth. Gilly for one has several books published but he (sorry if gilly is a girl) wishes to remain anonymous for the reason of not wanting to plug his own books and have his reason for being here come into question.
