I think some are open between Christmas and New Years. First of all, not all agents believe in Christmas or the Christian New Year. Secondly, a few people here have said they got offered contracts by agents on Christmas Day, who waited until then to surprise and delight them. Don't I wish. If you check the agencies' websites, I'm sure they'll say, if they'll be closed over the holidays.

I got two requests from agents this week to see my non-fiction proposal, both within a week of my original email query. So it's possible a lot of agents are open and getting much more accomplished this week than usual while everyone else is closed.

I have no idea, I live too far away... But I wonder. If an agency is closed, is there a good reason not to send an e-mail query?

It will just sit there among many. There has been much discussion here about whether to wait or send. As popmuze points out there may be agents who check their email more regularly than others during the holidays. If you get no answer you can always send another one in February.
Both my agent (at a very large agency) and my editor (at a large publisher) are both out until Jan 2.

If you're unsure, probably best to check their website or just call and ask the receptionist whether they're closing over the holidays. If you don't want to talk to a human, you can call after hours and see if there's a message on their voicemail with closed dates on it.

I just got an email from an agent telling me his office is closed until January 2, 2007. This is a computer automatic email, I tell myself. I will not allow myself to hope. I will not.

Yes it is computer generated.
I have sent a couple of emails to my agent with info she requested so she has it by Jan 2 and I get those in return.
It is all automatic computer generated but it tells you it is in the pile to be looked at.
Don't stress about it.
