After the first 50 my eyes began to glaze over and I only skimmed. I can't believe she took the time to actually READ each one and reply. My esteem for agents rose several hundred fold - imagine this being your daily fare, day after day.

I admit I'm starting to flag, and I agree Aruna, I don't know how agents do it. Now I'm only reading past the first sentence if A) That first sentence is interesting; or B) I know who wrote the hook.

Or C) I happen to have a few extra minutes and I'm bored. :) But mostly only A or B.

I haven't been online at all since Friday, so I shudder to think how far behind I am. I was starting to skim too though, when I was reading them last week, and like everybody else, my appreciation of agents is going through the stratosphere as well. I'm astonished at the insights she can give after a short time of thought over each one.

December, that's pretty much my criteria too...:tongue

Kansas! Again.
I've read every single one of them.

But then, I want to be a literary agent...

I'm almost embarassed to admit this, but I checked on the Crapometer on Christmas morning, and saw that she had it on hold for the day.

Then I checked back last night just in case she'd changed her mind.

I'm new to the threads and fascinated by all the blogs and links and sites that you guys discuss. Who is this Miss Snark? I've never heard of her (is that bad?) but her blog is great (at first glance). Does anybody know her background?

Miss Snark is a New York literary agent, whose real identity is often speculated on but never confirmed. She offers bits of insight and wisdom about writing, editors, agents and the publishing world, peppered with references to her dog, Killer Yapp, and the appeal of George Clooney. She's absolutely hilarious, but not for the easily-offended. If you want someone who pats writers on the head and tells all how brilliant we are, Snark Central is NOT the place to go.

Occasionally she does this thing called the CrapoMeter, where she offers writers a chance to submit a hook or query or whatever, and she'll tell you what's wrong with it or why it doesn't work. I've learned a LOT from reading Crapometer entries, beleive me.

Thanks for the insight, Patti! I do like her feedback to people - seems dead on. I just wonder, without credentials or knowing who she is, how she got so much authority! I'm going to go look for success stories - maybe that's the key. :)

Giggling in embarrassed solidarity, because I did the same thing.

Mine will be up soon, and I'm already dreading it. 400 hooks later and all the mistakes are glaring; I am actually willing to bet money on what her response will be. On the plus side, I've already re-written the hook and it's greatly improved.

If only I could rescind the old version and submit the new! But I'd just look like a nitwit...

A few people (including some blogging agents) know her real identity.

The part that makes me snicker is when people get outed as a Nitwit and then write back with "Oh, well, I'd NEVER submit to an agent as MEAN as you!"

but they don't know if they have or not.

A few people In the Business know who she really is (and I bet George Clooney could find out), but the rest of us just have to theorize.

I checked it on Christmas morning - and she'd already handled mine (the first no. 190) several days before. I'm very impressed that she's willing to look at all of these hooks and evaluate so many of them.

And she didn't care for my submission, but she did give me a lot I could use to fix it.

I misread her statement that she was offline through Monday - I thought I read "until Monday" so I looked. And I looked again on Tuesday. Today I got snarked. Big time. Must go hide in corner now....

Mine's coming up in about thirty or so. Sometimes as I read along, I wish the last two hundred of us had a chance to rewrite our "hooks" and send them back. Every time I see her write "you know by now this isn't a hook," I want to smack her with a stiletto. No kidding, we know by now, we've read three hundred of them already.

*sigh*

Oh well. It's been a learning experience.

*braces for her own Snarking*

I checked, too.

There were some new comments I hadn't read...
