I improved my grammar by reading and working at it. The nice thing about most grammar rules is, once you get it, you get it. There will always be some tricky new problem that comes along. But, for the basic stuff it's really not astrophysics.

I was forced to learn because I got a job as a copy editor years ago, and they apparently forgot to look over my grammar test answers before they hired me (no joke). So, the weekend before I started, I went to the bookstore and bought a grammar guide. I've been buying and reading them since, and now most of the basic grammar questions people have are simple to me.

Good luck, and it's worth it to work at it a little and learn it.

P.S. Oh, and some of the books I liked were "Right Write," by Jan Venolia; "Eats, Shoots & Leaves," by Lynne Truss (about punctuation); or some other basic guide that you find and like.

One other thing. The use of commas in America differs from the use of commas in England and most of the rest of the world. So, be aware of that.

(In America, commas ALWAYS go inside quotation marks when something is quoted. Same with periods. For question marks and semi-colons, it depends.)

I've noticed that Word's grammar checker doesn't always demand a comma where one should be for clarity.

Oh, wait -- I use the US English version most of the time. Must try doing a check in the UK version to see if there's a difference.
