I'm 17 and new to writing. I'm trying to write a science fiction novel. I have the entire story all planned out so all I need help with is the writing. Anyone willing to help me out?

Hi Virtual, there's already a lot of helpful responses in your SYW threads but there aren't any shortcuts to writing a full length novel.

You have the story planned - write it. You'll soon see if you have the stamina and determination to finish it, and you'll learn along the way by standing on your own feet.

Hang in there, and good luck.

You're welcome. Of all the folk who start writing a novel, few finish it, which makes the finishing a considerable achievement and something to be proud of regardless of the quality of that first one, and the process of writing it is itself a huge learning curve and enjoyable voyage of discovery. Good luck.

It's best you write your first book on your own. It's a tough journey but well worth it. Your writing bones need to harden before you bring someone else into the mix.

Good luck. You are welcome to take up the challenges of daily word count or goals, or just report in your WIP (work in progress) count in your signature, it can be motivational.

The only way to write a novel is start with a sentence, then add another and another and another until you type "The End".

I strongly suggest you resist the urge to go back and self edit, just plow through, if you notice anything that needs to be fixed put it in your notes section which can be kept on note cards, end of the document, in a seperate document, or a notebook. I also suggest keeping track of names of characters, places, events and so forth, it makes the process of writing so much easier when you don't have to go back to read to find one little detail.

Don't worry so much about length right now but an approximate good goal is around 80,000 words.

Good luck, if you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'm sure someone around here will be able to answer.

Also, don't worry about starting from the begining to the end. For me (this helps a lot) I write whatever chapter i feel like writing. Or whatever part. It makes the whole thing more enjoyable.

There are no real tricks involved just sit at your computer and write and see what comes out.

I always tell people, "if I can do it, then pretty much anybody can do it." ;-)

You'll be more satisfied if you write it yourself.

I was also in your situation, actually 14 years ago. I told my mother I had a story idea and asked if she would write it. She told me to write it up and she'd look at it. I did, and then she wrote back that it was my story and I should keep it, work on it myself. So I did. Now, I'm glad I did.
