There are a few things I'm confused about with proper grammar in dialog. I know its not the same as proper grammar in the narrative. (Like I'd never use 'gonna' in my narrative, but my characters say it a lot)
'.....' indicates a pause in speech. Do more dots indicate a longer pause? Is there a minimum and maximum number of accepted dots?
When people are really screaming something loudly, is it appropriate to use multiple exclamation points? "Don't!" vs "Don't!!!" If you can use more than one, what is the maximum?
I have several characters with speech patterns where they mispronounce words, like saying doin' instead of doing. I've been using ' to indicate where they drop a letter, but this is creating the effect of a quotation. Example: 'ave you been doin' Is there a way to type this without that effect?
Um, I might think of more but that's all that jumps out at me right now.
