All:

I think AW needs a poet lauriet. Just as the president of the US and prime minister of Britain select them (as do other institutions), I'd suggest that Mac and the mods get together and select a poet lauriet for our community.
I'd also recommend that lauriet serve for 6 months.

And, that's all I got on that because it is 2 a.m. here and I'm bushed.

Please discuss. I'd love to know what decision be made.

Thanks.

But aside from that, I think it's a great idea.

But what would be the occasions for which poems were commissioned?

Here's what a Poet Laureate is.
How do you suggest one would function within our community?

Jason,

I think that's a great idea. We could, of course, tailor the definition for our purposes here in the aqualine container...er, water cooler. There are many celebratory occasions here in the cooler, are there not? It feels like it, anyway. Maybe I'm just thinking in an, "every day is a party" sort of way, though. I know a laureate is commissioned to create poems for specific occasions, but maybe they could be more than that?

"The term might also refer to the holder of such a degree, which recognised skill in areas of rhetoric, grammar and language. This might be the academic equivalent of a modern day doctorate of poetry." ~~ maybe the appointed laureate could offer to mentor a poet or two...on a very small level...not in a way that would take up too much of his or her time.

Just thinking out loud...or rather, with my fingers?

Tut, tut Scarletpeaches, if he wants to define him as an English prime minister, let him. After all, he did say he was 'Bushed.'
Though wasn't Mr Blair a product of Scotland, being born in Edinburgh?
Therefore, couldn't he logically be called 'a Scottish prime minister?'

Me, I'm just glad I'm Welsh.

My thought exactly. And I regret not spelling it correctly. However, i also finished 11th in a 12-man Madden 2007 tournament just a few hours before. Yes, the two have nothing to do with one-another, but, again, cut me a little slack as I defend freedom, spread democracy AND throw touchdowns on an XBox 360 at the same time. :)

He's 'A' Scottish Prime Minister, but the Prime Minister of Britain, which includes...

Aw, sod it. It's nearly half midnight and I'm tired now. Sides, wherever he's from, he's still a walking abuse of the AW's swear filter being lifted...;)

*ahem* :D

Where was I?

I should be the poet, Queen of all I survey:
I publish rhymes,
committing crimes
in the thread which asks, "Are you gay?"

I thank you. No, really, don't all throw rotten tomatoes at once.

*dances off stage*

every day I awake and thank the lord I'm Welsh. I know this is a little off the point, but I don't regard Blair as my prime minister. I believe Wales to still be a FREE country that stands on its own without the rule of our overlords who took it by force so long ago. If I had my way, there would be a full-powered Welsh assembly. Plaid Cymru!!!

As for this laureate thingy, sure why not, it would be good to see what someone would make of the diverse situations that a poem would be required, but what sort of events would be the spot-light for such a post?

I'm guessing births, marriages, deaths maybe, Maestro getting married (a mournful dirge of a poem, that), someone reaching posts in multiples of a thousand, getting an agent, something published...

...Ooh I'm full of ideas, me. Full of something.

BUT! Who would decide which events warranted a poem?

Someone like poetinahat perchance?

*grins* I remember this one guy who called me the Poet Laureate of Sweden. That was pretty nice. -Once I looked it up to see what in the world he was talking about. (Apparently I'm not as literate as I thought, 'cause I never heard of the term before.)
Anyway, cool idea Jason. I don't rightly know what in the world such a poet would do, but the title is beautiful at least. ;-)

Okay, but we'll have to also appoint a Poet Lariet to go out and lasso our Poet Laureate into work.

I nominate Stew, and commission her to write a poem about TIO.

Kevin...I think he's already the Canadian poet laureate so this will be a moonlighting gig for him.

The title could be nothing more than a feather in someone's cap; perhaps a graphic they could stick on their Web site or simply something to tell parents and friends.

I envisioned it as someone the powers-that-be thought had great poetic chops and was a good steward of the AW poetic flock. His/her "duties" would be less than "duties" and more to "volunteerism."

I think the goal was to simply spotlight a poet who is a great community member, cares about the craft and cares about fellow AW poets. That person would be the Poet Laureate for six months.

Some other criteria bouncing through my head:

-- You must have posted at least five poems that have been critiqued.
-- You must provide critiques for at leat five poems each month. Those critiques should be longer than one sentence.
-- You should be visible in other good ways in the AW community.
-- You should be approved by at least a 2/3rd votes of the moderator with the ultimate blessing comming from her majesty Mac.

And good morning.

v/r, jt

This is a fun idea. You guys should generate a handful of nominations.

We're allowing mass murderers and felons, then? That broadens my search scope.

This red dot on my forehead better wash off....

Boy, do I have some ideas on nominees, but I'll recuse myself from the discussion.
