Not sure the forum, but since they're of this genre (don't split hairs with me on this)...

I sent a manuscript to Dreams of Decadence (dna publications) back in mid-June and haven't heard anything. Last week I contacted them through their website, a general DNA publications form to the publisher and haven't heard anything yet. Now what?

Anyone else notice Blackgate, a quarterly publication, hasn't put out an issue in a year and are currently not accepting submissions. I have a manuscript that's been there for over 5 months (their website says turnaround is 3-5 months)

Talebones is also taking longer than their usual turnaround. What's going on and what should I do?

Dreams of Decadence is dead. Their "current issue" is Fall, 2003. According to http://ralan.com/, Blackgate is backlogged and closed to subs until July, 2007. You can try a query note with Talebones if they've gone beyond their usual turnaround. It seems to be a trend with some editors to not respond to submissions unless they want to publish them.

Yeah. I'm a bit disillusioned about my subscription to Blackgate.

And I won't renew. *shrug*

Black Gate have closed to submissions so that they can get on top of the backlog. They intend to put out new issues shortly and aim to get to the quarterly schedule they originally committed to. I spoke to John O'Neill at World Fantasy Con and the mag is still very much alive.

As I understand it, John brought an assistant editor on board to help him catch up with the slush.

They have very long response times, but it's a beautiful magazine. With that said, I don't generally submit there because of the turnaround time. Hopefully the extra help will change things.

Oh. They should take down their website.

So how long should I wait before contacting Blackgate?

Talebones is usually pretty good with getting back to me in a timely manner, so I may email shortly.

Best way of contacting Black Gate is to ask in their discussion thread on SFF.Net

Man I'd love to start a speculative fiction magazine.

It's easy - all it costs is all your money and writing time
