Decide my next project for me (3 ideas)

Time to write a new book. I've written the opening chapter of all three books. Can't decide which to run with. Which sounds like the least waste of time and paper?

1. A Galilean Tragedy.
Fictional account of how a young Galileo tried to get the first ballpoint pen patented in the face of the Jesuit-connected goose quill monopolies of 16th Century Italy. (satire on religion)

2. The Grail of New Orelans
A private detective and his 3 clients take a road trip to New Orleans in the early nineties to visit Anne Rice because they think the last Super Big Gulp she drank (now sitting on her mantle as a reminder of her heiferous ways) before getting a gastric bypass possesses mystical powers. (satire on religion)

3. Experimental Religion.
A private detective who prides himself on his secret society busting abilities tries to bust a secret society conducting gruesome human experiments in an attempt at getting closer to God. (Sci Fi satire on cliched secret societies and of course, religion.)

#3...but is it the PI trying to get closer to God with his deeds or the secret societies? (I know what you meant, but the wording is arbitrary, and to be honest I think the idea of PI getting closer to God by busting secret societies would be more original and interesting...but that's me.

)

You know, this is just a shot in the dark, but I think you should scrap all those ideas and try something you haven't thought of . . . how about a satire on religion? *wink*

Seriously though, I think #1 or #2 . . . I can't decided!! Um, maybe number two . . . but I love the idea of goosefeather pen monopolies!!

But I like the idea of combining all three. Let me think, time travelling private detective is kidnapped by a secret society who want to sacrifice him. Unfortunately for them he is a vampire. He converts all their leaders to vampirism against their wills. They must find a way to devampire themselves and regain their souls. All this is set on a magnificent canvas sprawling from the Jesuit quill wars of 16th century Italy to twentieth century New Orleans and the home of a successful contemporary author. Gailieo is also exposed as a former cult leader who is now a time travelling vampire and has progressed from manufacturing ballpoint pens to giant book publisher (no unsolicited manuscripts, please).

There, it pulls together nicely.

#1, although #3 would be a close second. There's something about the premise of #2 that just doesn't sit right with me.

I vote for #1 because I like Galileo's philosophies on science and religion. I think it would be interesting to see how that's handled, especially in portraying a young Galileo.

Thanks for the opinions. I'm going to warmup with 3 while researching 1.

Writing about 16th century Italy will realistically take me a couple of months of research plus all the Galileo biographies I'm going to have to chew through, not to mention read all his papers to get a sense of who the man really was. That will take time. Lots of it. From what I've read of his writing already, Galileo seems to come off as a first class pompous jackass (He was smarter than everyone else and damned well knew it.) Right up my alley.
