Picture book partial

I'd say, on average, picture book manuscripts which arrive with illustrations have a slightly tougher time than those that don't. If the publisher likes the text but hates the art, they may consider that it'd be opening up a can of worms to try to break up a pre-existing author/illustrator relationship. It'd be easier just to reject the whole thing. Mind you, I don't think it's a huge disaster if you send some pictures in - if text or art are exceptionally good, the publisher will probably want to follow up in some form.

I'd just caution against getting an artist to do loads of work before you've got some firm interest. Most picture book editors I know are crying out for more outstanding TEXTS - not more outstanding illustrators. With no disrespect intended, the chances are that if they like your text there may be a better / more established / more commercial illustration option available to them than your friend.

Check out the tool box sticky at the top of the forum. A lot of questions have been asked and answered there. The general rule of thumb is..you don't. This doesn't mean you can't, just that most Publishers don't like it unless the artist is the author or vise versa. Personally I would like to see someone from AW break that rule! Good luck
