After Tri's encouragement in last week's The Weekend Progress Report, I'm going to start on a humor book - Sort of the antithesis of "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" genre, more like "107 Habits of Highly Defective......" Not exactly a "slacker" guide, but you get the idea.

Here's my question(s): I'm looking at the market and wondering if my target audience would be only people who would read a humor book lampooning the biz book trend? Or should I make an effort to include some helpful biz info delivered in a humorous tone? Would that make the audience more in the "self-help" area? (Yuck.)

FWIW: My husband thinks that I shouldn't try to hit 2 markets and focus on humor since that was the original thought. But you are the pros in this area.

I'm asking these questions now because I'm sure these decisions will shape the tone, etc. of the book.

TIA for any feedback,
Nancy

I'd just go wherever the concept takes you. If that includes some quasi-normal advice that can be delivered in a funny way, then use it, but I wouldn't worry about trying to be helpful, just funny. The title sounds like a pure satire, so I'd keep it that way throughout. I wouldn't target it completely toward self-help readers or any other specific genre, except humor. I'm no pro, though, just some guy.

Hi, Nancy.

I'm in a much smaller niche market, but I write the same type of thing you're working on--tongue-in-cheek advice and how-to. I've had a newspaper column and am currently the horse columnist (10 -15 articles per month) for an online 'zine. I can tell you that the best response I've had has been to essays which contain a modicum of truth--something the reader can identify with--couched in a wry, satirical style. One expert pre-publicaton reviewer called it "the sugar that makes the medicine go down".

Just my personal experience, but that's the kind of satire I write because it's what I like to read. Dave Barry is my guru. :D

Good luck with your project!

Just a heads-up, Scott Adams used a very similar name for a Dilbert book.

Best of luck in your book. I'm sure you will have a blast writing it.

Hi Joanne:

You make a good point and I know I love to read that (your) style stuff. Dave Barry's tone and style is one of my faves, too!

Riddler:

Thanks for the info. I probably wouldn't use any variation of that title because I doubt if my lawyer could beat up their lawyer(s). ;)
