Well, today I received the long awaited answer from Leisure (Dorchester).
The polite form letter, no.
I've had four rejections in the past week and I'm feeling like a great big 'loser'.
However, I will pick myself up tomorrow, dust myself off and send out more queries.

GA, I know it's easier said than done, but don't let that "great big loser" title hang around. Publishing is often a marathon event, not a sprint. You're in good company as someone who had to sub multiple times before landing a contract. Some of the biggest names in the business went through similar trials.

You've reached THE END. You're subbing. As long as you're trying, something positive can happen. Failure is only guaranteed when you give up.

We're pulling for you.

You said it! Now, print out your words in huge bold font and hang it where you can see it.

And heed Liam's words.
Here's some chocolate!

Most of you know these tidbits I suspect but for those that don't...

Stephen King wrote 4 novels before one was finally accepted (Carrie, which he hated.)

Dr. Seuss was rejected 50 times with Cat in the Hat.

I have heard that John Grisham self published A time to Kill and was about to resign himself to breaking even when he was picked up by Wynwood Press, who only gave it a minimal effort. He didn't get recognition until Paramount bought film rights to his second novel, The Firm.

You aren't down until you are out.

At least you're out there making some headway. I don't think you're a big loser, but someone who will make it oneday and come back here to tell us all about it.

Don't give up, get up, and go forward because you never know when that acceptance letter will show up and change your life forever!

He didn't self publish, but yeah, it did take all the effort on his part, including selling books out of the trunk of his car and contacts in the film industry to get his career started.

For the OP, I strongly suggest working on your next book if you aren't already. It takes a lot to get your work ready for publishing and time, best not to waste it waiting for an acceptance.

I'm bumming for you, GA. Just so you know that you're not alone, I got a rejection from Cemetary Dance today for my Tasted Youth short. It's the crappy weather that's got everyone down (at least that's what's happening up here in the pacific northwest).

Thanks all! And yes, this morning the sun is shining and it's Halloween! Just the perfect day to send out more queries - I've already sent two more and the day is still young.

I could go back to my first publisher who really wants the ms, but she's really small and I truly want to climb up the ladder.

So - onward I trudge...
Thanks again for the support!:Hug2:

You're welcome, GhostAuthor!
Pike--I'm with you on Cemetery Dance. Got my rejection yesterday. Oh well. On to other mags!

Durn tootin'! After a little revision (can't keep my mits off of my work) I'll pipe it off again. Got the 2006 Novel/ Short Story Market guide right here.

GA, getting your book published by a smaller publisher can help. Bill Gagliani who wrote Wolf's Trap, published this spring by Leisure, previously published his book through a smaller house. It helped him later sell the book to Leisure.

Rejection

Never give up. I've had weeks of rejection before. It's tough.

Emily Dickenson saw two poems published by small companies during her lifetime. Edgar Allan Poe lived in poverty the majority of his life with his two aunts, he was unrecognized. Herman Melville, author of "Moby Dick," needed 50 years to find a publisher to accept his book.

The ultimate requirement of writing is determination. Rejections are as certain as editing. I've had more than I can count. But, keep plugging at it. Sooner or later, you'll see success. Writing is a lot like life, it's always a journey and never a destination.

When you submit, move on to something else while you wait.
