In another world, of course
At the start of my story, two girls just finished high school in Japan. They've applied for jobs and college. This is told from the MC's best friend's POV, so obviously it's going to be a little strange.

But I dunno if it's young adult. I'd like to think of it more as general fiction or contemporary or something like that...

To me, it sounds like older YA, because it's dealing with the whole college thing. However, I think it would work for contemporary. The versatality is actually a good thing. You can market it to either YA or adult first, and if you don't get any acceptances, you can market it toward the other.

I've seen quite a bit of college fiction in the YA section, so I'd be inclined to say that yes, it is YA. But it is also your story. Perhaps it depends more on how it's told than what is told.

I'm sixteen, and it sounds like a book I would take home from the library (or buy, depending). However, it does sound like it's on that iffy line where it could be either ... I think if you end up marketing it as an adult book (I may be wrong here, so forgive me), many older teenagers are already browsing the adult stacks.

The book Prep takes place at a boarding school, and at my library it is listed as adult fiction. However, I enjoyed it, and it seems like the sort of book that other teenagers would enjoy, too. I think teenagers are more likely to pick up an adult book than the other way around. (Forgive me, oh wise and reverent adults of the Absolute Write community, if I have erred in this statement. :) )
