As he lay in the crushed ice, he would savor the small comfort of knowing he had proven himself before the High Warlord.

Correct? I'm usually pretty good with these two, but somehow this example is sticking me.

Bluejester,

I am struggling with this too. My grammar and spell check say it should be lay instead of layed or laid. But to me it just doesn't sound right in everyday language. Hopefully someone out there will fill us in.

We already had that discussion.

"Lay" is the past tense of "lie" so yes, so it's correct. I don't know what "future tense" you're talking about.

What I don't know about is "would." I think the correct sentence should be:

As he lay in the crushed ice, he savored the small comfort of knowing he had proven himself before the High Warlord.

Here's what isn't clear. He isn't lying in the bath now or then--that's something he's going to do. That's why I had "would."

In that case, why not change the 'as' to 'when'?
