writely is now "google docs and files" or some such. Fine for collaborating but don't depend on the formatting yet (beta version)

Well, I knew about them both for, I dunno, over a year.

I work in Instructional Technology, and frequently use Writely and its competitors as teaching tools.

Both links are work safe and safe in general, yes. Veinglory is correct in that Writerly = Google Doc's & Sheets or some such similar name. TiddlyWiki is pretty interesting so far, and I can see how it'll be interesting. I am worried, however, that upon trying to save the program or the work I've inputed, that I get a 'warning: script from the file can be harmful to your computer' message even though I know the script from /that/ particular program won't harm my computer.

eta:
I trust Google more then I do TiddlyWiki, if only because I'm more familiar with Google then I am TiddlyWiki.

I'm using Tiddlywiki not for writing but for keeping notes, outlines, character ideas, etc. When I downloaded Tiddlywiki it did say that a warning would pop up, that it is a default warning from the browser (Firefox?) and that you can tell the alarm to stop bothering you. (This is a fuzzy recollection on my part, and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong on that.)

This is where my popcorn comes in handy...no idea what this is for. Guess I need to be brought into the 21st century more. Would someone like to share?

They essentially allow you to write a document online. Other people (sleected foew or general public) can help you write it. You may then press a button to save it in many formats, pdf, html, etc

Largely simultaneous collaboration with multiple people, from my POV, although I also use it to generate html and pdf which Word does badly/not at all.

In another world, of course
Personally, I don't like TiddlyWiki, and I'm too lazy to sign up for one of those gosh darned Google accounts.

Well, this is coming from the 'I know HTML but I'm too lazy to put it to use' part of me. :p

I've been fiddling with Writely -- well, the program formerly known as Writerly. ;) Even blogged with it a couple of times. It worked great, except it didn't let me title my posts. Like veinglory said, it's still in Beta version.

(edited for typo)

But I have a word processor. What is the benefit to me, as a writer, of doing it online?
If you write on more then one computer it is a good way to work on it without needing to constantly send the documents between computers. Down side is you need a working internet connection anytime you want to do work.

writerly

I've been using Writerly since long before Google owned it. It's been very useful in allowing my agent and book editors get a look at an early version of something I'm working on without the need for e-mail or snail mail.

It has also proven very handy for allowing magazine editors to get a look at the early version of assigned stories or articles or essays just to make sure we're on the same page before I waste too much time. I get to know what an editor thinks before I do two or three drafts, and I can incorporate the suggested changes much earlier in the process.

I do some original writing on Writerly, but this is not its best use or prime function, at least for me. It's best use is for collaboration, whether with beta readers, agents, or editors.

It could stand some improvements in formatting, but it still works fine flor allowing others to read something you've written, and to offer suggestions.
