Hi --

I've been reading your posts for several hours now and I'm so glad to have found this board.

There's a lot of great information here and I'm so glad you all are so willing to share your experiences, insight and work.

I'm itching to read more and share my own experiences, so I hope to be an active participant!

As for me, I'm a nearly 38-year-old mother to two small daughters (2-and-a-half and 6 months). I write YA/middle grade (still discerning where my manuscript fits in) supernatural mystery/suspense. I've always written for a living (for the man), writing press releases, marketing materials and the like, and have long danced around my dream of writing for kids (taking classes, conferences, dabbling in notebooks, etc.).

For some reason (advancing age?), I've buckled down and gotten serious this past year. My goal is to finish the first draft of my book by December.
I've attended two Writer's Conferences in 2006 (just returned from one in Palm Springs) and met with two different agents at each who'd read 20 pages of my manuscript. I received good feedback from both (both asked to see the full ms), but I wonder if they make that request of everyone....
(I still am completing the ms.)

Though I've always written and thought of myself as a writer, I see how naive I've been with the writing of this manuscript. (For example, I had this warped view that re-writes were optional...that if I were really a good writer, I wouldn't need them...then when I realized the draft wasn't perfect, I'd get discouraged and give up for awhile. This means I've been writing my book since 1999)...

Nonetheless! As I said: serious this year. So thanks for being here.

Looking forward to reading more of the posts --

Debbie

Welcome!

And no, agents don't request the full manuscript from everyone they see. Definitely not. You did good!! Hope they are top of your list for when you finish :)

Hi Debbie. Welcome to AW. Like Moondance said, it's a good sign that agen'ts are interested in your work. Rewrites are optional, but if you choose not to do them, then the answer will be no.

I've learned more from this forum than just about anywhere else.

Look forward to reading your posts.

Thanks,

SM

Hiya Debbie. Great to see another possible MG'er on the boards. (I teetered between MG and YA for my MS, but decided upon MG due to the age of my MC. Now I'm trimming the wording and story length as I edit/rewrite. Gah!) Welcome to AW! :D

Hey thanks for welcome~

Jodi -- what are you writing? (Mystery, etc.). You must be thrilled to have finished (although the rewrite! hear you on the "Gah!").

Hi and welcome,

I'm also a 38 yr old mother of a two year old... and I also write YA and middle grade fiction! Nice to have your company. I'll go and read your chapter too!

For some reason, it was having a child (maybe the advancing age thing, too!) which kicked me into high gear with writing. I'd been saying I wanted to do it for years but didn't really make it happen until my little guy was 9 months old or so... and I've been writing like mad since.

Hard to find time though, hey? And you have two little ones! I'm glad you're pursuing your writing now and wish you well with it.

Hi Cassidy:

Finding the time is definitely an issue. Right now my kicking baby is on the couch next to me as I balance my laptop on my knees in almost total darkness (I am trying to get my little bugger to fall asleep).

I've told myself that I can write a little something each night, even if just a sentence. I guess I just decided that that was the only way my writing dream was ever going to happen.

It's hard: I'm so exhausted right now! But the dream keeps me going (sort of)!

How do you do it?

Best of luck with your own writing! Have you submitted anything yet?
