They started a thread in the YA section about why people write YA. I guess I thought that might be an interesting question for us too (sorry if this has already been done!). So why do you write MG, or PB?

I guess I'll go first. I write MG because, to be honest, I love MG! When in my last year of highschool I wrote my final paper comparing Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. I am also a certified Harry Potterphile. I think what appeals to me about MG's is that the writing has very little to do with ego. The audience is fickle so the story has to keep moving. There is the possiblity of being profound without being pretentious. It can't take itself too seriously, and because of it's reputation as being for kids, also has the ability to genuinely shock when an adult theme or two is deftly snuck in there for the parents reading to the children. Oddly my motivation in writing MG's has less to do with writing for the children, and more about writing what I like to read. Though I do love when a kid likes your stuff, or thinks you're cool. And there is something incredibly unique about the influence of a book early on in life. I can remember them all.

I may think of more reasons later, but that's it for now.

Your turn!

I love picture books. Just something about the punch they can pack in so few words. I want someone to make pretty pictures for my stories too. :D

And I like middle grade. There is something so freeing about that level. If it's the plausible impossible, kids love it. I love Harry too.

I write PB as well as adult stuff. My PBs aren't published yet, but someday. I'm hopeful the rejections won't last forever.

I love the mix of words and images. I think it's magic the way an illustrator can take the author's words and create more magic. I love that interplay. PBs are when kids start falling in love with books and that appeals to me as well. :)

I actually write both adult and MG stuff, and i've always got one project in both areas on the go at once.
I love the writing MG because in a few weeks I can take an idea and turn it into a completed story. Also theres something very challenging about writing using a less complicated vocabulary. There is also the thought that one day, it might just be the first book that little person (1.5 year old daughter) reads all by herself.
I just gotta find the right person to like it too.

I love the interplay, too. It's like playwriting, which I love because I can't wait to see what the director does with it, what the actors do with it, what the stage crew does... Writing isn't normally like that, where you get to see others' "vision" of your piece. But picture book writing gets close... seeing what an artist does with your words is so darn cool. I've done two picture books so far (Hattie, Get a Haircut and Taking Down Syndrome to School) and both times, I was so happy with the artwork.

I love writing for kids because I loved reading as a kid. Very happy memories.

I think this is all really awesome, especially the comparison of writing a PB to writing a play, getting a chance to see it actualised. I'd never ever thought of it that way. That must be a really special feeling!

I have five demanding little critics who plead for new stories every night. I love PBs because they inspire me to think visually and through my childrens' eyes.
