Almost two months ago, I sent a short story to 'From the Asylum.' The estimated response time was 4 to 6 weeks. About a month ago, we were disconnected from our ISP and also my email address connected with it.

I managed to switch all my memberships and mailing list subscriptions over, but I had sent my submission under this email and hadn't told the editor when the ISP disconnected. When I got back online, about a week ago, I sent them an email explaining what had happened, but there hasn't been a response.

I'm at a loss what to do because I still haven't heard back from them, and they could've sent me a response during the time they weren't aware of my new address.

I sent another email again last week, again with no reply. I'm worried I've gone about this the wrong way and they're just ignoring me like they would a badly formatted MS.

Unfortunately, email is very easy to ignore. And when a zine goes into hibernation they can be nearly impossible to get a hold of. It's best to withdraw your work once you've had no response, period. Send a friendly message by postal mail saying you're sending your work elsewhere. If they read the message or not, it's not your problem anymore.

Never let any publication stop your work from getting out there.

I checked back today and they'd updated their message. They're still going through the submissions, so I sent them another polite email asking for the status of my submission.

One thing I've learned since starting this new job of mine, polite persistence pays off.

I got reply.

I sent another message to the editor, replying to the confirmation email I received when I initially sent the sub in.

They replied within an hour with the response they had sent to my inactive email address in November: a form rejection.

Oh well, at least I know now and can sub elsewhere.
