I have a problem...I get all these ideas for stories while i am working on one already so i put them in idea book for another time but then i can't get it out of my head and i stop working on the first story. so I have all these starts and stops for stories and now i don't know which one to work on first.

Something I heard during a panel discussion at a convention I went to this weekend:

Finish everything you start because you always learn something in the process.

Now...

I have a similar problem, so I'm going to have to try hard to implement the "finish everything" statement. I'll let you know how it works out for me.

Either pick one and finish it, or throw them all away and start over. Yours is a common complaint, and it leads nowhere good.

It's just a matter of doing it. You just have to have the discipline to sit down and stick with one story until it's finished. And if you have too many ideas written down, throw them away and stop writing things down.

HEINLEIN'S RULES FOR WRITING

1. You must write.
2. You must finish what you write.
3. You must refrain from rewriting, except to editorial order.
4. You must put the work on the market.
5. You must keep the work on the market until it is sold.

I have that problem, too! Two things that help me to finish things nowadays are: my writers' group and my blog. I joined a writers' group that meets every 2 weeks and we share our work. I knew I HAD to get something finished so that I would have something to share. I also post all my stories to my blog. I have a few friends who follow what I write and I enjoy getting feedback from them.

I find it helpful to discuss the story you're working on with a close friend who doesn't know the story. Their enthusiasm will spark your initial enthusiasm in the story and it will be easier to get back into writing it.

The same things (a million ideas) were on my mind. Thank you. I'll get to work on the epic WIP.

write down the idea and come to it later. finish the story you're working on, go to the next story, the next, then go back and edit when you've forgotten/lost passion about the first.

plus when you put an idea for a story aside it's easier to tell if it's got worth or not.

Go to a dollar store or a WalMart and buy a bunch of those cheap-o 1/2 inch binders, or several very large binders, and a package or three of those divider pages. Dedicate each 1/2 inch binder, or one section of the large binder, to one idea, and purge your brain of everything to do with that story on either looseleaf paper, graphing paper, blank sketching paper, or typed on the computer and printed. Mark the next 1/2 inch binder or section of a large binder for a second idea, and purge your brain of everything to do with that story in that section/binder. Continue doing this until you've purged your brain of every story you've thought up.

Then, make an index, label the binder(s), and continue to write whatever comes to mind and put it into each section. This will help you stay organized and because you've gotten everything out of your head, you can clearly focus on one story. If a change for another story pops into your head, or a new idea for a new story comes up, purge, organize, and get back to writing. Hope this helped!

DB (DreamBubble for short, that is), that sounds good. I have this...binger, or folder, such as high school people use here in my country. There's one section I've given to a story and after that I place the feedback. I know it sounds odd, but if you saw it, you'd understand. So I'm glad to know I'm on right track...or then my understanding of English betrayed me in the first place.

I have about a dozen stories on the go at the moment... it's rediculous. Most are short stories... but still... all the ideas have come at once. And when they come you've just got to get them down. Ya know?

This is a problem for me to and usually I drink less coffee

Something I heard during a panel discussion at a convention I went to this weekend:

I have a similar problem, so I'm going to have to try hard to implement the "finish everything" statement. I'll let you know how it works out for me.

Finish everything you start always sounds pretty, but it never works for me, it starts nice and neat, but finishes very scattered and scuggly. No that's not a word, but I like the s's and n's. One thing that helps me is swimming, weird I know but its the one place my head will stop quiet down and relax, otherwise I'm very hyped up most of the time with a lot of energy and no place for it to go, so finding a place to breath helps, maybe Yoga, something, where your thoughts are your own. Helps me.
