Hi. I have no idea if this is the right place to come for help, but here goes.

I have an idea for a booklet, I've thought about it for a long time. I am a volunteer for CASA, which is an organization that advocates for children who are in foster care. My experience has been that children in foster care have so many adults in their life (counselors, caseworkers, etc...) that they don't really understand what MY role is. My idea, briefly is to create a booklet or possibly a coloring book for children. This way the advocate could easily explain, in kid-friendly language, what CASA is and so forth.

Our local CASA is undergoing changes and the new director is very open to all new ideas. How should I approach him?

Should I have some sort of a dummy or just an explanation or should I actually create the booklet? Another issue is that I am NOT an artist. Are there programs I could use to create something simple like this? Or will I have to find a real artist? Also, I would love to get paid for this. These programs run, mostly under the county and they do have money. How do I approach the money issue? Another idea I had was to possibly create this for free for our local office, but then charge later when other chapters want it. How would I do that? Do I copyright it?

I hope this is the right place to ask all this. If not, please let me know and I'll repost.

Thanks,

Lavinia

I think that's a great idea, Lavinia. I would talk to the director. He should be able to help with the funding idea. It would probably have to come from your commissioners court or whomever is your funding agency. They could include it as a budgetary item. You might look for a local chapter of SCBWI and see if you can find an illustrator willing to collaborate on a worthwhile project.

Before approaching the director, I would flesh out your ideas in the form of an outline. I wouldn't go as far as a dummy, but would I would make a proposal. Good luck. It sounds like a great idea.

Thanks for the ideas and encouragement. I belong to SCBWI. I'll check their website now.

Thanks Again!
