Ontaio, Canada, eh!
I just seen a posting for a "email notice" for "pre-sales" of book 7, Harry Potter.

I am a fan but aside from that I am in awe at how successful the books are.
I can only dream that one day people will want an "email notice" for a "pre-sale" of one of my books.

Super congrats to J.R. Rowling!

Places like Amazon.com allow you to place pre-orders for future releases. You are reserved a copy that is billed and shipped on the day it is released.

You can do the same thing with movies too. On the actual day of release it may be sold out almost everywhere but if someone preorders they hold a copy just for you.

I always pre-order the HP books from Amazon. I'm not into standing around the bookstore at midnight with a bunch of kids, getting shoved around, etc.

Amazon always guarantees delivery of the book on the release date, and they haven't let me down yet.

What I find amusing/scary is that she hasn't finished writing the book yet. No, really, not finished writing it, and people are taking orders. Not in ARC, not been reviewed yet, not even finished.

That's who I wanna be when I grow up.

Did you see 2 weeks ago or so, she was flying back to England and they wanted her to *check* her manuscript and not carry it on?? They eventually let her get on with the ms bound securely, but sheesh, no way I'd be putting my longhand ms in the cargo hold!!

This is one I'll definitely preorder, description or no. I'm ok with being a sheep in this instance. LOL!!!! I love Amazon, thanks for the note about guaranteed delivery! I never looked at their preorders before!

Usually Walmart has plenty of copies, a discount price, and no lines. I love WalMart.

I can't *wait* for book 7! There are lots of promo shots out now for the next movie and it looks great too. The kids are really growing up.

(Can one of you darling mods please fix the typo in the thread heading? It's driving me bonkers)

My publisher is working on the release dates for next year, and it looks like my book might come out around July 1.

Speculation puts Book 7 to be released around July 7. Ack.

I hope JKR's comes out in like September instead. I'd hate to have to try and sell books at the same time she is. Sigh. But it always works out that way - my last book came out right around the time the Goblet of Fire movie did. What a retched time to release a book, but I'm sure other books will come out the same time too.

Now, the next movie WILL come out in July - and if you head to The Leaky Caldron site (google them) you'll see pics of the movie.

Nope--the release date is a gimmick 7-7 of '07

But yes, I think we all dream of selling that many books and entertaining that many people *goes off into daydream*

Pre-release sales are extremly important in publishing. This is how a novel debuts high on the bestseller list.

If it helps, Christine, I won't be buying Harry Potter that day. Or any day thereafter. :tongue Haven't read one of them yet, and see no reason to start now.

To those who pre-order, why do you do it? Do you not have stores near you who sell it for a reasonable price? Or do stores sell out? Me, I'll just go buy it at Target the next morning. It's cheaper than bookstores, only about two miles from home, and always has a much of copies in stock.

It's so sad to think that next year is the last time any of us will ever buy a new Harry Potter book. *snniff*

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Most of the stores sell out almost instantly. Kids and fans hang out in the bookstore to wait. Stores take pre-orders too, and stay open until after midnight on the release day, so they can give them out at 12:01. They have parties, where kids dress up like wizards, etc...

Me, it's one of those things that I just wanna read when it comes out, but I don't want to beat back the crowd.

I feel special when the UPS man hands me my book in its special HP box.

I receive the book much faster when it is released, and I don't have to stand in line, or risk having the store sell out before I get there.

I don't order many books this way. Only ones I absolutely do not want to wait for. King's "On Writing" was one I pre-ordered, and the last HP book was another. I usually pre-order two books a year, tops.

You're joking, right? Amazon alone pre-sold over half a million copies of the sixth book. They had a special ticker box to show how many copies had been ordered--it was on the news and everything.

I'll pre-order from Amazon again--when OOP came out, having the FedEx guy pull up outside at 10 am and say, "Harry Potter!" as he handed me my box was really fun--but I'll go to a bookstore release too, especially since this is the last one. I know I'll need to buy more than one copy anyway, and last year my book didn't arrive until like 4 in the afternoon when all the stores had shelves and shelves of them. So I'll do both.

I was seriously disappointed by book 6, but I'll buy book 7 just to see how it finishes. I hope it's not as disappointing.

Yup. I pre-order a few things that I know will be flying off the racks. HP is one of them. I love the books, but I'm standing in line with a bunch of kids in robes to get it. Amazon rocks. The only thing better than buying books is having someone bring books to my house. If only they brought me chocolate at the same time... *goes to google chocolate delivery*

I know that's the rumor, but TLC says that the publisher hasn't made an official announcement. Plus, the OOP movie is scheduled to open the following week - 7-13-07. Don't know if they're going to want both released so close to each other, or give themselves a little leeway with the book.

On the other hand, I know most of them come out in the summer so kids can read them without the distraction of school. Yeah.

I'm waiting. Not much I can do about it anyway.

I was beginning to get all excited there, but on JK Rowling's Website all it says is:

Book 7 Update

Now that I'm back from New York, the only real news is that I'm continuing to work hard on the book. I've done quite a lot, and I'm really enjoying it, though every now and then I look up and realise that it's THE LAST ONE. You might think I'd have got used to that idea during the sixteen years I've been planning seven books, but it still keeps hitting me... no more Harry after this... and then I bury myself in book seven again and tell myself I've still got plenty to write.

The heightened security restrictions on the airlines in August made the journey back from New York interesting, as I refused to be parted from the manuscript of book seven (a large part of it is handwritten, and there was no copy of anything I had done while in the US). They let me take it on, thankfully, bound up in elastic bands. I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't; sailed home, probably.

I am currently trying to decide between two possible titles. I was quite happy with one of them until the other one struck me while I was taking a shower in New York. They would both be appropriate, so I think I'll have to wait until I'm further into the book to decide which one works best.

Why does that make you un-excited, then?

Personally, though I'll reserve my copies of it (always two there are) at the little local bookstore, I will then go at midnight when it comes out and wade through the army of kids in weird clothes to pick them up.

I will do this because I love seeing the costumes, I love seeing the three hours before midnight where the kids do nothing but read and buy other books. I do this because I meet the smartest, most interesting people I have ever met who wear wizarding robes.

I'll do it because though the rest of the mall is closed, the whole hallway outside the bookstore is roped off and called "The Forbidden Forest" and has a big security guard who's a nice, affable man and who dresses as a convincing Hagrid with only minimum assistance to reach seven feet tall.

Also, I will do it because they have free cookies that lots of people bake and bring, and they're really good.

I know this is the last one. I'm considering just sucking it up and going with my aunt and cousin to the store and enjoying this one last party.

And hey, PD, you're right, they'll buy other books too... wonder if I could possibly get a signing that night??? LOL probably not. That's me, always thinking.
