"She made a face."

I have recently read 2 books by different authors in which this phrase was used repeatedly. One book was an older book (1981) by a well known author and the other was a hot-off-the-press Harlequin.

This phrase just annoys the crap out of me.

Am I just totally off base. Is this a genius description and I should use it repeatedly, too?

It's probably just me, but the expression has always evoked a very clear and definite picture in my mind. Also, the face being made is usually compounded of so many emotions (disgust, dislike, questioning, etc.) that it would be cumbersome to try and describe them all briefly and well.
