I've just an experience of exactly this on another writing forum (mentioning no names) only this morning. My post of a book review offer at my review site, Sexography (it deals with all genre) has just been deleted because it contained adult or erotic content. *cough* It didn't but I have to respect the rules and regulations, and I do.

Incidently, I've chosen not to frequent this forum again. My choice and not open for discussion, lol!

My question is:

Has anyone else had any problems getting their site listed in directories, their articles published and featured, books listed etc because it is in the erotic genre?

Do you mind being disallowed from posting your site details because it may be classed as adult?

Love to know your thoughts!

I am aware of limited acceptance of my work in certain quarters for many reasons, erotic content, gay relationships, electronic publication, non-American writer... etc. I try to excentuate the positive and throw my support behind inclusive sites whose main focus is on their (broadly defined) genre, and quality material.

Case in point--I just noticed that a critiquing yahoogroup that I have been a member of for some time now does not include m/m and has a separate group for the explicit sex, BDSM and m/m--because it was putting other erotic romance writers off joining. I didn't notice the change as it occured a few weeks ago while I was busy elsewhere and I just noticed now. I have been recommending this group to all sorts of people. Bloody hell.

Blimey! That's exactly the sort of thing I mean. Why on earth would it put other erotic writers off? To me, that's crazy!

I looked at your site, and am guessing it's not your reviews of books, but of sex toys (plus your links to places that sell them) that gets it classed as "adult."

Maybe if you had a separate page for the devices, directories would be more likely to list your book review page?

Hmm, that might well be it? I looked once at a very profitable affiliate program for sex toys but was afraid it would put my site on the wrong side of all those net nanny programs so I didn't do it.

I've only just recently started to review sex toys and linking to the sites that I review for. Sexography had been classed as adult well before that. For example, one link exchange site I joined, classed it as adult and one linkee refused to exchange with me because he said it was too close to porn. Sexography is no where near a pornographic site but I am aware that I have to respect others for their views and wishes.

The post on the forum of Sexography's offer was only really the most recent problem I've had with regards to being unable to link or advertise my services not only as a reviewer but as a writer of erotica.

Veinglory's experience is a classic example of the problem that I've come across and I had no idea that even writers of erotica are exempt from sites of an erotic nature.

As I now review sex toys, I'm happy with the labelling that I'm a sex site but the post I initially made on the forum made no reference to adult stuff or erotica which the moderator unfortunately seemed to see.

I just wanted to know if anyone had the same sort of problem at any time in their career.

:)

If you write some sorts of erotica (like romantic or other cross genre) and don't post explicit excerots then you will come out on the all-ages side of most rating systems. Of course there is no guarantee--all it takes is some daring cover art on the index page and it can be all over ;)
