I just had occasion to discover the first rejection note I got from an editor for my current novel making the rounds. This dated back to 2004. The gist of it was that I had so much information and so much verbiage clogging the narrative, it was impossible to find the story (this based probably on the first 50 pages).
I took the thing back into the shop after that, and for the next couple of years proceeded to trim it, cutting scenes and sentences, from 130,000 words down to 100,000.
Slimmer, sleeker, it's still drawing comments from agents like "I didn't connect with the narrative" or "the story could be stronger." Everyone likes the characters, the setting, the writing, but I'm wondering in all this revising, if I've actually found my story yet.
I have a feeling this is the last hurtle blocking the finish line of publication (or maybe it's the first hurtle). At this point, I've been willing to keep shipping it out to agents willing to read it, of which there seems to be an inexhaustible list. But I'm afraid I may still not have confronted the problem I had three years ago. Is it possible that in all my revising, I may not have actually done any serious rewriting?
Or is it vice-versa?
