I know this should be in rejection and dejection but since I shared my initial excitement with you all...I wanted to share my rejection with you too.

I got my Harlequin rejection yesterday. It was very nice and an actual personalized rejection (I have precious few of these)...the things I knew with be an issue i.e. the level of violence were exactly what she cited as the reason for rejection. But what surprised me were the nice things she said about the setting and characters. Also, she cited the lack of internal conflict as opposed to the external conflict. In the original ms there was more internal conflict but I had to cut some of that for length to submit to Harlequin and in my opinion it hurt the story. Namely, I had to kill off a character much earlier in the story and basically elimenate her completely from the story. It was much better when she was in there.

So, in light of the recent rejection, I've decided to shelve the novel for a while and work on submitting another ms that has been languishing on my laptop for a long time. I think it would be perfect for Harlequins Intrigue line. For once a rejection doesn't leave me hurt but has spurred me to get my butt in gear!

Sorry to hear your ms was rejected, but glad to know it's spurring you on to greater things. good luck with your new[old] project.
Do you mind me asking how long Harliquin
had your ms?

Sorry to hear this, Kirstie. You'll get 'em next time--and meanwhile, you can start thinking of other places to possibly submit the rejected work after restoring it!

A personalozed rejection from HQ is a really good sign!

They had a partial (first 50 pages and a detailed synopsis) for just shy of 3 months. I sent it out on 6/26 and received the rejection on 9/22.

Awww. :Hug2: But on the upside, you had feedback, which gave you insight as to why they turned you down. That's more than what most would do, so that's great. Good job on being motivated, too!

Sorry you got rejected, kristie911, but at least you did get the reasons. And remember that there are plenty of other publishers who are fine with higher levels of violence. You might consider sending it out again while you're working on that next ms! Nothing says you can't be pubbed by more than one publisher. :)

:Hug2: on the rejection, but kudos on the fabulous attitude about it! It's great that you're using it as a springboard to get yourself moving!

:e2cookie: Have a cookie. :) Then get back to work.

Stay upbeat about the personal rejection. Nothing about this business has to be personal - they have loads of form letters they could send instead.

This editor thought your work rated some of her very limited time and she used it to inform and encourage you. Hooray!

Now write a simple thank you note to her so she doesn't forget your name and knows you appreciated her effort and would be a dream to work with in the future!

Oh, and think about that internal conflict. If you have enough for a book you can't cut it out by killing a single character, it IS the driving motivation of hero and heroine.

I know how you feel. I got a FABULOUS response rate on my recent small batch of queries for my paranormal romance (2 request for fulls, 1 request for a partial, 1 request for the first 5 pages, and 1 rejection), but all except the request for the first 5 pages ultimately turned to rejections. (Haven't heard back from the agent who requested the first 5 pages yet, but she IS very busy so...who knows?!) On the plus side, the first agent to request the full offered specific feedback and invited me to resubmit the revisions, or to submit a new project, so that was encouraging. And the fact you also got personalized comments is a very good sign.

Here's hoping we both have even more success soon! =) (You know, once I finish adding back the 45,000 words I just cut and polish the rest!)

:Hug2: I almost want to say congratulations on the rejection, since they were so positive about it. I'm sure it will find a home with the right publisher soon if you send it out again. That's great that it's motivating you to take another look at an old project, let us know how it goes!
