Hi,

I am searching for a term which describes the following:

In the classical Hollywood cinema screenwriters had to "code" their scripts with triple meaning so that intellectuals, cineasts and the "normal" movie goers each got their own enjoyment out of the story.

This technique of coding meanings had a special name. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Stefan

Anybody here know??

A 3 dimentional story??? Seems if your story is deep enough, the plot is easy enough to understand but has roots that go deeper should the reader/viewer desire, and the characters are real enough to love/hate, then you can appeal to all levels.

Is that really just limited to classical Hollywood? Wouldn't movies such as The Incredibles and Shrek be similar in concept -- for kids, but written with enough adult references to keep parents happy?

I'd just call that writing on multiple levels. I've heard people describe the process of layered meaning as "onion skinning." I doubt that's the term this person is seeking, though.

Subtext.

And the poetry of the dynamic relationship between action and dialogue.

Buster Keaton was great.

Ditto Chaplin.

I'm sure they did it intuitively.

yep, subtext is the exact word you're looking for. There isn't always one layer of subtext.

An example, please?

I relayed the info, but the forum member says there is a

"terminus technicus"

the studios use in house.

I sure can't find anything.
