I've been researching various publications to submit my short story to soon. I've come up with a short list and was wondering which is the best to consider. Are there better ones for mainstream fiction?

Atlantic Monthly, The
Cincinnati Review, The
Harper's
Kenyon Review
New Yorker
Ninth Letter
Paris Review
Ploughshares
Southern Review, The
Sun Magazine, The
Tin House

Zoetrope: All-Story
AGNI

This still needs some editing before you send it out. For instance, you tell us twice that Mouse was different. The first one can go.

Now, on to where to submit! What I would do is organize my list by putting those who take sim-subs at the top and send it to them first. If you'd rather not sim-sub (but why not?), then start with the highest paying market and work your way down. Or, you can check response times on Duotrope.com, and send it to the quick responders first. Another high-paying market that you don't have listed is Glimmer Train. I haven't been over to SYW to see if you've put this up yet, but please either get an outside crit or attack it yourself with the blue pencil. Make it tight, and send it out.
