In most PB's that I have read, I notice quite a few exclaimation points used. However, in another thread I recently read that these marks should be used sparingly or not at all. I am wondering, does the same rule apply to PB's or not?

In general, picture books have no more than the normal share of exclamation points -- you just notice them more because five !s in a 500-word book is a lot more obvious than five !s in a 45,000-word book.

The general rule is to leave exclamation points out, unless it's within a bit of dialogue.

As a parent, there are few things I hate more than having to read a sentence like "And then Bitsy walked all the way into town by herself!"

Or even 'Why, Look - It's Patti's Home Page!'

I overuse exclamation points, so I understand your dilemma. An agent told me to show the excitement with action, not punctuation, so I tried it and what do you know? I don't miss them a bit. :)

Reading aloud with heaps of exclamation points is almost impossible. They become meaningless.
