I'm having a bit of trouble finding a home for some of my short works that have slightly strange content. They aren't strange enough to attract genre readers, but aren't normal enough to fit in the literary fiction markets either.
For example: In one story, a bitter, recently-divorced father subdues his harsh feelings long enough to make sure his teenage son is adjusting well, and as a result the father is haunted one night by his own ghost. That's about the midpoint of a story that goes on to unravel the lies of the marriage in a very normal way. But the ghost thing is crucial, and must not be construed as a dream, etc.
I've read enough issues of enough publications to start worrying that no one these days is publishing variants of magical realism. The stories themselves beta very well, so I don't want to give up on them. Can anybody recommend markets that carry this kind of fiction?
