One of my WIPs is best described as a fantasy romance. Think Dungeons & Dragons type setting only in romance form. I believe--doesn't everyone??-- that the story is good, but I'm stuck as to where I would send it.

Does anyone have an idea?

It doesn't have to be a huge press, just one that pays royalties and can be considered a legitimate publishing credit should they accept me. <G> Of course, given the fact that this story is a bit unique in its premise, I shouldn't be fussy. LOL.

That's what I was going to suggest -- Anna Genoese at TOR has said before that she's interested in fantasy romance for their paranormal line, and LUNA is all about fantasy. Less romance, but if the romance is a big part of the story, it's fine. It just can't be the WHOLE story.

But if they like the story enough, they send it on to other departments. HQN has a more broad scope as to what they publish, I believe (though I'm sure Crinklish could give us more info).

The fantasy romances I've got on my shelves look to be from Avon Romance, Luna, Signet Eclipse, and Onyx, in order of oldest to most recently purchased, if that helps.

I wasn't kidding when I said Dungeons & Dragon setting. No, there's no copyright infringement at all. Just the use of pirates, dragons and adventuring. <G> The romance is 50 to 55% while the adventure is 45 to 50%. When I get the first chapter really spruced up, I'll close my eyes and post it in the SYW forum. Thank you guys so much for letting me know that my WIP isn't an orphan. ;)

Hey, D&D doesn't have a monopoly on pirates, dragons, or adventuring. If any of your characters shout "Hah! Natural twenty!" after killing the arch-villain, however, you might wanna check into the OGL. ;)

Worse yet, the hero groans, "Ah, hell, babe. Nat. one. We're gunna die."

The story is loosely based on the storyline between the characters my husband and I played while we were gaming. Our dungeon master was always kind enough to make a subplot involving us since we were the only married couple playing. What I wanted to do was to take our characters and give us a "real" story. Sort of like what would happen if there wasn't all of the hacking and slashing and rolling of the dice. Kinda corny, huh?

That's not corny at all. I've written several short stories about my longest-running D&D character -- not for public consumption, though, mostly just so my fiance, who was DM'ing that game, could get a feel for how I pictured my character and his NPCs.

I was writing about and for the game, though, so I couldn't change "canon" as one could when writing a book inspired by a game, and I really felt the pinch.

As long as it's a good, solid story and you can be objective about your PC (I never can!) I think the built-in history will just make for a better novel.

I have a bunch of short stories I wrote many years ago which were about the adventures of a ranger I played in an RPG. My ex husband and I were big into gaming, and it's always a great source of inspiration for story ideas.

That's actually where "the Wicked" came from :)

Wow. All of this feedback makes me feel a lot better about this story that I'm writing. I'm glad that I brought this question up. Y'all are so cool. :) Cookies for everyone. LOL.
