"[God] took [Abraham] outside and said, 'Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so," [God] added, "shall your descendants be." (Genesis 15:5)

Just think about it...

Go on, sci-fi guys, start thinking about combining descendants with stars.

You'll get my point soon if you haven't already.

You know, I think only a thousand or two are actually visible to the naked eye.

beezle, let me try and make the context a little clearer:

This was during a discussion between God and Abraham about children, inheritance, and land.

Let me say one of those again: Land.

We are pre-ordained to claim those stars for our children.

Are you really sure about that? He wasn't just saying, 'you'll have lots and lots of grandkids'?

I'm not the Pope, yet, so you have to take my interpretations with a grain of salt.

However, the fruits of the possibility for double-meaning is ripe enough to be plucked for your own projects.

Doesn't it mean his descendants would be huge balls of flaming gas in the sky, light years away from Earth?

Yeah, that's my family. Makes gathering for seder night quite a challenge.

I did, and confusion is good. Like a good zen koan, my post will flower in your soul after much pondering.

Or, you'll die and never understand. Whichever.

Wow. Trippy. So I look up into the sky and see all the stars. And then I think of what all the stars are made of: get down to it, and it's atoms and molecules. And then I think of that theory of stuff all being connected, so that the guy down the street from you has one of the molecules that used to belong to Napoleon in his left cerebral cortex. Which means that when I'm gone, my kids or my brother's will not only have part of me in them, but part of other parts of other people within them, who could possibly be any one of the people I'm talking to right now...
Ow, my brain hurts.

I'm not sure how good my astronomy is, but I'm fairly sure that there isn't much land on a surface of a star. Something to do with the difficulty of forming solids at high temperatures.

So the Jews get to claim the land on the stars, and other races get the planets? Sounds like kinda a bad deal for the poor Israelites. First having the only bit of the Middle East without oil, and now being given some non-existant land on a star ...
