If this appears twice it's because I posted it but can't find it.

I'm going to a writers conference were we will have a set time to pitch our work to publishers.

Question: Is it okay to take first chapter or should I take the whole ms? Only the first chapter has been edited and revised.

Do you have a synopsis written? And can you describe in three or four minutes what your book is all about?

Some conferences have a "pitch workshop" you can attend before you make your pitch.

I wouldn't take the entire manuscript or the first chapter. The ms. is too unwieldy, and from reading various threads here and on other writers' boards and blogs, I haven't heard of any agent or publisher asking for an entire ms. or the first chapter.

The publisher might give you their business card or something, telling you to then send the first chapter or whatever. So make sure you have everything set up and ready to go after you come home from the conference.

Hone your pitch, make it sparkle, and see what happens. The worst that is that the publisher won't be interested.

And have fun at the conference, too! :)

(BTW, if you want to keep track of where you posted, you can subscribe to a thread.)

Unless the conference information specifically says otherwise, I would bring NO PAGES AT ALL.

Every conference I've been to, it's been clear that agents/editors are not prepared to lug home a gazillion pages (400 pages x 10 requests?), but will ask that you mail them afterwards, if they're intersted in reading them.

Thanks All,

Yes I've got a killer pitch. For the first couple days the conference will focus on fine tuning our pitch. After that we will pitch to the publishers. I don't know what to expect but I'm excited.

JerseyGirl1962 what do you mean by subscribe to "A" thread?

Yeah, the worse that can happen is lack of interest...but, hope springs eternal...One day I will be a famous author...one day I...

Whenever you start or post in a thread, you have the option of "subscribing" to that thread and getting e-mail notifications whenever someone else posts to the thread (there are different options you can choose). It's available when you do a "Post Reply" rather than a "Quick Reply".
