Last night, it occurred to me on the edge of sleep that I suck. I truly suck. I suck horribly.

Sucking is also my greatest strength as a writer.

Because I suck, I have to edit. I have to edit alot.

Thank god I suck. If I didn't suck, I don't know what I'd be doing.

Uh, you have a couple mis-spelled words in your original message, so I guess you also suck at editing? Just kidding...:tongue

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, spooky:

If I edited my webposts like I edited my books, I'd post about once a week.

Even unfiltered ducky has some merit, I hope.

Only on the edge of your sleep? Lucky you. I get that feeling most of the time when I'm awake and sometimes even in my dreams.

Of course, like you, for me it's the rewrites that seem to work more than the first draft.

:)

Take care all -

Maybe you suck only on the edge of sleep. That wouldn't be so bad, would it? If you ever woke up, you'd be a star!

Don't worry, ducky, it's the people who insist their writing is perfect and that they don't suck who actually do suck and will never improve.

*uhem* if that makes sense.

Interestingly (though perhaps only to me), I also believe my writing sucks. When I look at it, I see only the flaws. I can't help but compare it to prose stylists of greater depth and muscularity, but no matter who I compare it to, I come up lacking.

That being said, I think I'm perhaps the harshest judge of my own work and merit. I'm getting a lot of feedback at the moment that says I don't suck, and do, in fact, approach 'rock'. Which feels great, but doesn't necessarily sink all the way in during those dark nights of the soul...

So that means I'm, in reality, amazing?

WOW who knew? Oh, wait, if I say I'm amazing that means I suck, right? But if I admit that I suck, then I might well be amazi . . . Harcort Fenton Mudd !!!!

I'm dizzy.

You know I didn't know I sucked until I actually tried to write. It's weird because as long as I'm in a hurry or under some serious diress, my work is fine. When I sit down, focus, and think about writing...I'm the queen of suckdom. Why is that?

My writing self-esteem lives mainly at the bottom of the toilet, so I know what you’re saying. Suckage seems to be a fact of the writing life. Perhaps we’re all too hard on ourselves. Or perhaps I’m the only one who actually sucks.

That makes two of us J.M. There must be a club, right?

Just when I think I have nailed the first fifteen pages, I find out that my characters are flat! "Well, just blow them up for crying out loud!" I want to say, but know more truthfully there is not enough internal monologue there. The one time I leave it out and this is what they tell me, although I do believe I am showing more, because they haven't mentioned that yet, my critiquers that is. See what happens when you focus too much on one aspect of writing, all the rest of it goes to...well, you get the drift :)

Editing is another story altogether and I am not going to think about it until I get there.

Sigh.

Yup :)

People who think they suck strive harder to improve their writing. People who believe their work to be perfect, don't.

Ah, there's hope for me yet.

Just call me Dyson. :D Yes, I suck that much. It's been hard to get myself to the page the last two days because I can't stand seeing how much my WIP sucks.

This is a good thing, folks - it means you can tell the difference in your own writing. It's a short hop from there to smoother, better writing. When you can see what's wrong - see it plainly! - then you can improve.

No one writes perfectly - but only people who know they need to improve, will. We all need some improvement.

Badducky, you are on the right track!

I don't know, but I am equally sucktastic whenever I sit down and try to be awesome. The rest of the time, I'm fine.
