Do agents normally accept picture books or are they normally submitted directly to publishers. Maybe i'm being dumb but they don't seem substantial enough on their own.

There are agents who rep PB. It's hard to get a PB read at a major house without an agent. But many middle and smaller publishers accept them unagented. Check Agentquery.com for juvenile fiction.

Many agents will not take on a first time author on the strength of a picture book. I submitted mine (and was accepted) directly to publishers.

I now have an agent, but that is down to a YA novel. She will handle my picture books in the future but she doesn't accept authors that way. If that makes sense!

Where are you thinking of submitting to, Kilamangiro?

If it's the UK get the Children's Writers and Artists yearbook and have a browse.

Many UK publishers don't accept unsolicited manuscripts and will only see them if they come via an agent.
Trouble is a lot of the agents in the UK don't accept unsolicited manuscripts either.

I think you would have about 12 of each to go at, at the current time.

It's a bit of a tough market at the mo!

I have similar cash problems so know where you're coming from.

If you do happen to be close to a library, then you could try there. I know it's Ireland but they may have a recent copy kicking about.

PB's aren't as lucrative for agents as novels. Smaller advances, and the going royalty rate is 5% (it's actually 10%, but you split with the illustrator). So you can see how it's not worth it much of the time.15% of your 5% - meh.

So there aren't many. Barry Goldblatt I know takes PB authors. He's a major player in children's books.

This is one I've been wrestling with: To agent or not for PB. I've decided to go for the middle to upper range of publishers who take unagented submissions and see what happens. Now I need to send those submissions out before I waffle and change my mind again!

I have an opinion question: One of the agents I want to submit to accepts e-mail queries. They also take snail mail. On the sub-guideline page it requests the ms with query if a pb. So should I enclude the PB in the e-mail submission? I'm thinking yes..but not 100% sure

I would say yes, paste it in. Sarah and the Sm is less than 600 words. That's my $.02. Good luck.

If you wanted to make sure, BK, you could always phone and ask. Just make sure the person who answers the phone understands that you are talking about a PB.

I actually send my mss to both publishers and agents. One publisher at a time and four agents. I don't sim sub to publishers, but agents generally (not always) seem to consider it standard practice.
I'd prefer to have an agent, simply because they know the market better than I do and they also know their way around a contract.

I haven't got either yet, but will be sure to let you know if I do!

howdy folks.

I went and got the 2008 guide to agents. I found 29 who represent juevy and childrens. There were more whom also just rep'd juevy and not childrens, also excepting a small to fair amount of unpublished authors. I don't have the hour it should take to list them all right now. But hopefully within a couple of days I should be able to post the list that I came up with.

shh... I'm thinking...
But what are the numbers as far as the publishers that print a book without your having an agent vs. those that require you to have one. I'd always believed an agent was a no-no for picture books. Is that naive of me?

took me a few days but I finally have a few spare seconds so here is that list I mentioned I would post. Keep in mind these are picture Book agents. There were more agents that handled say YA and other Juevy but that is not what I needed to find at the time. Also, I only included whatever was needed for you to look up and find the more specific info on each agent.
