Just a quick question for anyone who has time to answer.. Do you prefer happy endings or sad ones, and why?

I don't mind as long as it suits the story/reinforces the underlying message. I'm definitely not someone who always wants a happy ending - in fact, I often get frustrated because they can be too idealised.

I prefer satisfying endings--ones that are right for the story but leave me with a "finished, but that was good" feeling.

In general, I like happy endings, but not if it feels false.

same as above: I like endings that suit the story.

I don't like it when people just make things depressing for no good reason (as certain famous TV show creators who shall remain nameless are fond of doing), but a happy ending the story didn't earn is just as bad as a sad one it didn't deserve.

Well, happy is as happy does. I enjoy serials and I'd prefer seeing the MC come through in the end. By that I mean, at least he doesn't die. If something unhappy happens other than that, as long as it's a good ending, that's fine.

In the toidy.
If the MC is goodlookin', he's gotta live.

Other than that, the ending simply has to make sense, and be good ! :D

It has to suit. I prefer happy ones but sometimes they really do not fit and I prefer a sad one.

I think I prefer sad endings. I'm morbid that way. As a child I would read sad stories about dying animals and sob and sob, and that was my idea of a good time.

Although I agree with above posters who say that a satisfying ending is best, even if it's a good one.

I prefer a happy ending. I can deal with a sad ending. I can't stand an ambiguous ending!
