Just thinking ahead here (yes, I want to join the Glimmer Train wreck soon)....
I've published a short story in a confession magazine (circulation 250,000). Although I did not get a byline, I'm assuming that this publication would still disqualify me from entering the New Writers contest, correct?
Yes, Glimmer Train ask for unpublished stories. Actually most competitions do. So you can take it as the rule!

Thanks! I guess I wasn't clear in my question because I was planning on submitting a different story to GT (obviously, they're not going to publish a typical confession story). I just wanted to confirm that I could not be considered an "unpublished writer" under their rules and would have to submit my stories as a general submission or via their open short story contest.

If you didn't get a byline, I think you're probably considered "unpublished" so you may still qualify.
Sorrry about that!
Why don't you e-mail the editors and ask them?

::hitting self on forehead:: Doh!
Seriously, I'm not always this clueless. Must have od'ed on the catnip when I wrote my quesiton.
EDIT: Okay, after some digging, I found their definition of "new writer" (posted for anyone else who was wondering the same thing):
"So far as the 'New Writer' competition is concerned, if any of your fiction has been printed in any physical publication with a circulation over 5,000, you are a published writer, by our definition, and do not qualify for the Short Story Award for New Writers competition."
Those two "anys" tell me that I don't qualify, even though I didn't receive a byline. Fair enough.

I would comment, but I have no idea what the Glimmer Train contest is.
