Hi:

What are some good short story magazines for me to read as well as submit too? I have tried to get a subscription to Glimmer Train but that is the most unprofessional place I have ever dealt with and has really turned me off from the magazine.

Thank you for your assistance.

Nikki

What kind of stories do you write? I write mystery & science fiction, so I read Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Ellery Queen, Futures, and a host of online ezines.

I also read The New Yorker for literary fiction.

There are markets listed in the beginning of this "Short Story" forum - check 'em out! And best of luck!

Hi Nikki -- what happened with Glimmertrain? I've had subscription with them for years, and have had good luck. ? I also enjoy their product. Just curious.
Edited : Ooops, i forgot my suggestion for a link www.duotrope.com allows you to enter search criteria and come up with hits based on what you're interested in.

Most major universities have literary magazines and many are well respected. Writers including Joyce Carol Oats continue to be published in these markets. Some of those that come to mind include Ploughshares, The Missouri Review, Iowa Review, Mississippi Review, Dragonfire (Drexel University), New Letters, and Chattahoochie Review. Look in Writer's Market under "Literary" for many more.

Others that come to mind include Boulevard, Atlantic Monthly (they do an annual fiction issue), Tin House, and Zoetrope.

A few online respectable literary journals include StorySouth, Scrivener's Pen, and Collected Stories.

It took a month to receive my first copy only to learn it was delivered by Media Mail. Pony Express could have gotten it here faster in my opinion. Nonetheless, I have recieved my copy and learned that patience is a virture. I am going to subscribe because I am very impressed with the look of the magazine and do want to submit to them. aand although this may sound corny, but they send book markers with their magazines and that impressed me more than anything.

I do look at duotrope as well. Thank you just the same.

Johnny, thank you very much for the suggestions. I am looking each one up right now.

Actually, I don't think waiting a month for Glimmer Train to show up is that ridiculous.

I think Zoetrope took at least that long to arrive when I ordered from them, and I'd both subscribed (starting with the next issue, thus the wait was expected) and ordered a back issue (which I didn't think would take that long).

Oh, and if you like bookmarks, The Paris Review comes with one as well (though Glimmer Train's are infinitely cooler).

Waiting a month for a first issue is very fast, not slow. I've had to wait three months for several magazines.
