“A writer needs three things, experience, observation, and imagination, any two of which, at times any one of which, can supply the lack of the others." - William Faulkner

"Always remember, perseverance is as important as talent." --Dean Koontz

You must keep sending work out; you must never let a manuscript do nothing but eat its head off in a drawer. You send that work out again and again, while you're working on another one. If you have talent, you will receive some measure of success - but only if you persist. - Isaac Asimov

You are not a hundred dollar bill. Not everyone is going to like you...or your story. Do not take rejection
personally. - Meg Cabot

"The reason 99% of all stories written are not bought by editors is very simple. Editors never buy manuscripts that are left on the closet shelf at home." -- John Campbell

and finally, from someone much less well-known than all of the above:

A rejection seldom means, "Your work stinks!" It usually means, "Your work, for whatever reason, isn't what I need or want right now." It just means I need to keep looking for the right place for my work. It means not giving up. - Betty Winslow

Keep trying, keep writing, keep sending it out.

...if i may add one of my own, for the despairing and the timid:

'Nothing is impossible until you quit... and nothing is possible, unless you start!"

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!!!

As a newbie not only to the site, but the the role of "serious novelist" I often find myself feeling discouraged and incompetent. But, I'm going to print out the fab quotes and hang them directly above my computer for inspiration in times of those "Where's the gun" mood. I can't thank you all enough for helping us newbies keep the writer's faith.

And here's my inspirational quote (I hope):

Dreams are easily turned into nightmares by lack of confidence. Nightmares are easily turned into dreams come true with perseverance.

Hallo!

Here is a quote I wrote on a post-it which I keep on my puter screen:

"Writing takes more than talent. It takes a kind of nerve...and a lot of hard hard work."

Georgia O'Keefe

This quote helps me whenever I can't seem to make the sentences flow.
