:hi:
Hey gang.

I hope this is the right forum for my questions, if not please feel free mods to move this thread.

I've got a free serial going online now, and I'm curious if there is such a thing as too much marketing? Sure you send at emails and posts and mailing lists, but is it overkill and a waste of time and money to go for real world advertising?

Sure I'm not making money by people buying my story-even with Adsense, but if I garner an audience online that equals fanbase and could lead to bigger and better publication, yes? So are flyers around town libraries, bookstores, colleges worth the investment?

I know it's too grand now, but in a few months when the serial really kicks in, would it be worth it to start up Cafe Press, offer other easy merchandise (bookmarks, stickers) have a book party even if there is no book?!

:Hail:

Please feel free to smack me if I need it!

Kristin

It really depends how you define "wasting money." If it's cutting into your food money, then yeah.

On the other hand, if you have a certain budget set aside for "writing expenses" and this doesn't blow a hole in it, it could be worthwhile. Advertising vis a vis flyers etc, can't hurt but be aware it won't bring in a huge audience either since you'll be limited to wherever you can get to.

Another thing you might try is business cards. A pack of 500 or so won't cost you that much and giving someone a business card at appropriate times (ie, if the topic of your story comes up and you can just give them a card with your name and website addy) can be a solid investment in this case.
