Emailing agents after sending material?

[Please move if this is the wrong section, but after a quick forum search this was the predominant board for this type of question]

I was fortunate enough this past week to recieve 7 requests for partials or fulls of my manuscript as a result of e-querying. Four of the 7 wanted the material sent postal mail. My question is thus: after popping the manuscript in the mail is it appropriate to send a quick email saying, "It's on the way"?

I've searched Miss Snark and here and can't find a difinitive yes or no answer, so I turn to you good folk for assistance.

Miss Snark would say don't email them. I would agree with them. There's no need for you to tell them you've sent it. They assume you will. It'll show up when it shows up and they'll read it eventually. Be prepared for at least two to three month turnaround. Do not email them in a week asking, "Did ya read it? Huh? Huh? Did ya like it? What do ya think?Huh? Huh?" :poke:

Just be sure to mark the envelope "Requested Material" so that it doesn't get sidetracked into slush.

It does no harm at all to send an agent an e-mail saying requested material is on the way. Such an e-mail doen't demand an answer, and lets the agent know something is wrong should the package not show up in a week or so.

This is a not at all the same thing as e-mailing and pestering an agent about whether she's read it or not.

I agree with James. I do this whenever I get a request via email. Just a quick note mentioning I am sending a package labeled "requested material" and you should see it in a few days.

I usually get back a response that says, "Thanks, looking forward to it."
