David Gemmell has died. A great writer and a big influence in the fantasy genre. He was 57.
Far too young

Sad news. After I started reading Gemmell I just gave up writing fantasy, he was so damn good. Took me over a year to get to the point where I'd even consider trying again. A truly talented and prolific writer of most excellent epic fantasy that should not be missed by any fan of the genre.

Take the critiques you get with a grain of salt. Invariably, some of the critics will be kooks, bitter curmudgeons, or complete fools. ~odocoileus

I never read any of his stuff, but I knew the name. That in itself says something about how good he was, methinks.

Rest easy, DG.

Sad news, and truly a big loss for the fantasy world. I enjoyed his writing very much... my thoughts are with his family and friends.

If anyone out there has not read his work and is interested I would start with 'Waylander' or 'Morningstar'

I was privileged to meet Mr Gemmell a couple of times and found him to be a real gentleman as well as a great writer

I prefer Legend to Waylander.

The Drenai books taught me that a story of epic proportions did not need meandering plots, casts of thousands, or weigh in at fifteen pounds.

RIP David.

Not only haven't I read him, this is the first I've heard of him.

I'll have to check his works.

Gemmells works are hard for me to describe. I recommend them whole heartedly though. Pick up Legend for a story that grips immediately and races through tense action in a short number of pages. Larger than life heroes, but believable and flawed for all their prowess.

Makes me want to pull out my copy tonight, see how far I can get.
