I played around and figured out how to post a poll;) This relates to the discussion we're having here: http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34318&page=5&pp=25

Here's the extended version of my suggestions. Please let me know if I should add or change the choices. I think I can still do that on the poll?

1. Keep the chain the way it is, let it get longer with more participants and don't worry about how long it takes.

2. Keep the chain in theory, but have one person tag the next, without a predetermined order. We could actually have several chains going at once this way. We'd need a check and balance to make sure everyone was getting tagged (sounds like 3rd grade;) )

3. Organize a carnival of some sort so everyone who wants to join can, on a specified day, with a predetermined theme. (Theme and host would change each time.) Here's an example of a travel carnival I participated in. We could also format it like the Wordless Wednesday or Thursday Thirteen games.

I think we need to define carnival for those who are unfamiliar with that concept. :) You can read more here and here. The basic idea is this:

Blog Carnivals typically collect together links pointing to blog articles on a particular topic. A Blog Carnival is like a magazine. It has a title, a topic, editors, contributors, and an audience. Editions of the carnival typically come out on a regular basis (e.g. every monday, or on the first of the month). Each edition is a special blog article that consists of links to all the contributions that have been submitted, often with the editors opinions or remarks.

Of course, that doesn't mean that that's the way we have to do things. :)

We could, for example, have someone different host a carnival every week (or whatever time frame we deem appropriate), and everyone who wants to write on that assigned topic submits their blog permalink when they're done, and the hostee can post a list of links to all the different blogs.

Personally, though, I think it would benefit us all - as in everyone who participates - if everyone posted the list of links. But then, that's something I've already mentioned before in other threads.

Anyway, just want to stress that blog carnivals don't have to be done exactly the same way that others do them. :)

All great points Laurie. I've only participated in the one carnival. It was really easy because I actually submitted an old post that fit the theme. I linked to the host's site and one other post I liked. But you're right - we would all benefit if all participants included the entire list. The carnival approach would make the list-making more streamlined too. We'd all have the list the same day as we posted to the carnival (rather than a month later when the chain's completed).

Oh! Kelly, would you want to change the choices so that we can choose one or more options instead of being limited to just one? I don't know that it really has to be an either/or. Part of what I'm thinking is that, if there's enough interest, one person can get started on one thing while person B gets started on something else and person C starts something else a week later and they overlap in terms of some participants.

Well, that's just me thinking big again. :)

Having participated in a few blog carnivals, I think it's one of the best ways to blog together. It gives everyone adequate time to put their posts up (the chain system can get a touch stressful at times since you must finish your post fast to take the chain forward etc.). Also, the diversity of blog entries on a single theme is always a treat to relish.

Personally, I prefer the carnival idea to the chain one. I agree both are great fun, though. :)

It did seem like this last chain took a long time. Maybe it is getting too big.

I really like the idea of a blog carnival. If we did that, who would pick the theme, and would the theme change each week? Maybe the host of the carnival would get to pick the theme?

I don't like the carnival theme thing.

I really don't mind if the chain takes long, then again we could introduce a time limit, if within 48 hours someone hasn't posted it's automatically the next one that is up.

I can't really care what we do or how we do it. Just tell me what I'm supposed to do and when, and I'll be there with bells on.

I'm sorry - I don't know how I missed this post earlier! I'm back now and tried to change it, but don't know how - if someone could explain, I'll be glad to do that.

By the way, no reason we can't have periodic carnival AND a chain that takes us so long we turn grey;)

I was about to say this- why can't we do both? I'd like to try the carnival thing but I also like the chain.
