Has anybody ever done any easy reader type work.
I'm thinking of round about the 3-5k mark.

Most publishers give guidelines on PB's and then on fiction, but even if they do publish easy reader the guidelines seem few and far between.

Funny, I was just about to ask the same thing. I've got a whole series of these in outline form, and I've read enough to know how to proceed, but are there any fine-points to these early chapter readers that should be considered?

I would love to be able to write an easy reader.

I have written an EZ Reader, it's 2,800 words and is currently being rejected by many agents and publishers.

Allen,

Did you arrive at 2,800 words due to a publisher's guidelines, or just by guessing the average length of early-reader books> Seems about right to me, but I know very little about this so far.

Also, did you submit yours based on it being part of a series, or as a stand-alone?

Is it true that series are better sold as a unit in this bracket, rather than as individual titles?

(I think I'm due for a trip to the writing reference section of the bookstore today).

In anycase, good luck with yours, Allen.

The concept began as a picture book, but I realized I had more story than could be told in 500 words or so. I wrote the first draft(s) which came to about 3,500 words. I looked at some easy reader books in the library to study their structure and word count, plus I found sources online for word counts for various children's books. A typical easy reader at third grade level was about 2,500 to 3,000 words, give or take.

It's a stand-alone story, a historical fiction piece set in 1895 on a train

I don't know about series vs individual titles, sorry.

I wrote the story earlier this year and finished around March, mostly because I was ready for my next project and had the idea for the story. So I wrote it and polished it, etc. Now I'm writing an adult novel. Much more fun, I think.

Good luck!
