Hi there! I haven't posted here before, but I just wanted to ask a quick question. What is the customary size used for sending queries and/or submissions? Thanks!

ENVELOPES

If you are in the US, use standard #10 business envelopes for queries and submissions under about 5 sheets. If the submission is too fat for a standard business envelope, I use a manilla 9x12. Enclose a standard self-addressed #10 business envelope for a reply unless you want the ms back, in which case you send a large enough envelope with enough postage for the return - but most ms are disposable now that computers can easily make clean copies.

oh, and faery? You can click where it says "edit" under your name and fix those pesky typing gremlins...

Welcome. :grin

Re: ENVELOPES

Welcome faery.

For those "in-between"-sized submissions, say from 4-8 pages, I use a 6"X9" envelope with the submission folded in half. Up to 3 pages would be in a business-sized, folded 3 times, more than 8 in a 9"X12".

re: envelopes

Thank you guys so much! I recently sent out my first snail mail query and have been worried that it would be thrown to the way side because it was in the wrong sized envelope. :grin And I'll definitely be using the edit button lots here, hehe. Thanks again everyone for the kind welcome and responses!

Re: re: envelopes

Welcome to AW.

And I doubt a query would get tossed aside for something like the wrong-sized envelope when there are so many better reasons for editors to toss aside or reject a query.

While you're waiting, you might as well send out a couple more ideas to a couple of other publications. Can't hurt.

Re: envelopes

If it's only 1-3 pages query, I use a business envelope, folded in thirds.

If I'm sending a partial, I'd use a 10x13.

re: envelopes

Wow! Thanks everyone so much for all of your helpful advice and information. I'll be sure to keep it in mind when I send out my next query. Oh! I should introduce myself huh? Well, my name is Brenda, I'm a college student and trying to make my way as a writer. I've gotten quite a few on spec assignments so far and was paid for my first real writing gig a few weeks ago, so I was pretty excited. I'm just trying to adjust to this lifestyle of the writer. I must admit, that I do love setting my own hours though. hehe. :grin Well thanks again guys, and I'm sure I'll be posting here again with more questions.
